Irish brown bread is a form of Irish soda bread made with whole wheat flour.  This bread is a staple in my wife’s family, a hot cup of Barry’s Tea with brown bread topped with butter instantly brings me back to Ireland County Meath; visiting Nana and Pappy.

  • In a large bowl measure flour, bran, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  • Mix all together and make a well in the center.
  • Pour buttermilk and cooking oil into the well.
  • Stir to moisten, scrape into a greased 9x5x3” loaf pan. I like to use a round cast iron dutch oven pot (no lid) to give the bread that typical round shape.
  • Bake at 350F for 1 hour.
  • Remove from pan to cool
